External Layer 3 Fabric

Configure border leaf connectivity to external networks using VRF Lite with automated compliance and health monitoring.

Border Leaf Connectivity

Border leaf switches (like Site1-BL1) provide Layer 3 connections to networks outside the VXLAN EVPN fabric, enabling north-south traffic using technologies such as VRF Lite for external routing.

Automated Configuration

Nexus Dashboard simplifies external connectivity by automating configuration for supported devices (Nexus, ASR9000, NCS5500) and ensuring ongoing compliance and health checks for external connections.

External Fabric Management

External Fabrics extend VRFs to external devices, following Cisco best practices for scalable and reliable data center connectivity. This setup is essential for connecting your VXLAN fabric to the broader network.

Step 1 - Exit Site1 Fabric

  1. Navigate back to Nexus Dashboard and in the top right corner, click the to close your Site 1 fabric. Depending on the screen you are currently are, you may need to click one more time the .

Step 2 - Launch Create Fabric Wizard

At this point you should be back to the Fabrics main page. You should now see Site1 and present.

  1. Click Create Fabric


  2. Click Create new LAN Fabric
  3. Click Next


  4. Click External and inter-fabric connectivity
  5. Click Next

Step 3 - Configure Fabric Settings

In the Settings page:

  1. Name the fabric: ExtL3
  2. Under Location Type: Raleigh, US
  3. Set the BGP ASN to 65333
  4. Set the License tier for fabrics to Premier
  5. Then, click Next
  6. Click Submit

Step 4 - View Fabrics Details

Once the External Fabric has been built, the GUI will take you to the All Done!

  1. Click View Fabric Details

Step 5 - Edit Fabric Settings Type

  1. Click Actions
  2. Click Edit Fabric Settings
  3. Click Fabric Management
  4. Uncheck Fabric Monitor Mode
  5. Click Save
