Device Credentials Setup

Configure default device credentials so Nexus Dashboard can communicate with all switches in your fabrics. Set it once, use everywhere — no need to configure access on each device individually.

Why This Matters

  • Centralized Credential Management — Configure once in ND, applies to all discovered switches
  • Automated Configuration — Every switch import automatically inherits these credentials
  • Simplified Operations — No SSH'ing to individual devices to set up access
  • Robot vs. User Mode — Choose between per-user tracking or unified deployment account

Following RBAC configuration, establishing Device Credentials enables ND to manage and configure all devices in your lab environment. This is a critical Day 0 step that unlocks ND's automation capabilities.

Step 1 - Navigate to Device Credentials

  1. Click Manage
  2. Click Device Credentials

  3. Click Set

Step 2 - Configure Default Credentials

Default Credentials should be set per user, meaning each user configures their own credentials for audit tracking. However, the Robot option allows a single account to be used for all deployments — useful when you want all configurations to appear as deployed by one service account rather than individual users.

Lab Configuration: Since this lab has only one user, you'll use the admin user for Default Credentials without the Robot option.
  1. Username: admin
  2. Password: cisco.123
  3. Keep Robot unchecked
  4. Click Save

Step 3 - Confirm Success

Acknowledge the success confirmation and verify that credentials are properly configured.

  1. In the success confirmation popup, click Ok

Step 4 - Verify Configuration

Confirm that the Default Credentials status now shows Default Set, indicating successful configuration.

Success!

Nexus Dashboard can now authenticate to all switches in your fabrics using these credentials. Every discovery, configuration push, and management operation will automatically use this credential set.
