Configure Switch Roles

Assign border gateway and external router roles for proper external connectivity architecture.

Border Gateway Role

Border leaf switches (Site1-BL1) act as the gateway between your VXLAN fabric and external networks, handling VRF routing and VXLAN encapsulation/decapsulation for north-south traffic.

External Router Role

External routers (Ext-Rtr) connect to border leafs via VRF Lite, providing routing services to networks outside the data center fabric while maintaining tenant isolation through VRF segmentation.

Step 1 - Set External Router Role

Set the role of the external device, Ext-Rtr, correctly:

  1. Click Inventory
  2. Locate and select the checkbox for Ext-Rtr
  3. Click Actions
  4. Click Set Role in the dropdown menu
  5. In the Select Role popup, click Edge Router
  6. Then click Select
  7. Click Ok in the warning popup that informs that you must perform a Recalulate and Deploy.

Step 1 - Review External Router Role

Review the switch role you set. Again, each switch role will serve a purpose in the type and amount of exact configuration required to be deployed to a given switch, in this case, an external device.
